Shampoo: Rethinking care for Mature Hair

In my last article, I talked about the quiet changes many of us notice as our hair matures. Less fullness. A different texture. Hair that simply doesn't respond the way it once did.

The natural question is: What do we do differently?

For years, we've been taught that healthy hair begins with shampoo, followed by conditioner or a treatment afterwards. It's the routine most of us have followed without ever questioning it.

But what if we've been starting in the wrong place?

Looking at Hair a Little Differently

Mature hair isn't "problem" hair. It simply has different needs.

Over time, both the hair and scalp can become drier, more delicate, and less forgiving of everyday washing, brushing and styling. A routine that worked beautifully at thirty may no longer offer the same support at fifty or sixty.

Sometimes it isn't about finding more products.

It's about finding a better moment to use them.

The Forgotten Moment

Before water touches the hair, both the scalp and the hair fibre are exactly as they are — not swollen with water or exposed to cleansing ingredients.

It's a brief moment that most routines overlook.

Rather than seeing shampoo as the first step, I've come to believe that the time before cleansing offers an opportunity to give mature hair occasional, more thoughtful support.

Not every wash needs to be different.

But making space for a dedicated treatment before cleansing from time to time can help hair feel softer, calmer and easier to manage afterwards.

It's not about adding another complicated step.

It's simply a different way of thinking about hair care.

Keeping Hair Care Simple

One thing I've learnt over the years is that caring for mature hair doesn't have to mean using more products or following longer routines.

Often, the most effective changes are also the simplest.

When we understand how our hair has changed, we can make small adjustments that work with those changes instead of trying to recreate the hair we had twenty years ago.

Over the past year, I've been exploring one simple question:

What if mature hair needs support before cleansing, rather than only afterwards?

That question has led me somewhere I wasn't expecting.

I'll share more about that in my next article.
