Sometimes, the products we feel most compelled to create are the ones we believe are missing.

For me, SUBSTANTIA began with a feeling that there was room for a more considered approach to scalp care, particularly for fine, fragile and thinning-looking hair, and especially for more mature hair and scalp.
I wanted to create something purposeful. A product developed with care, where the ingredients had a reason to be there and the finished formulation met the standards I had set for myself.
What followed was over a year of research, formulation, refinement and testing. I knew I had developed a product I believed in, but I could never have anticipated where that journey would lead.
In 2026, SUBSTANTIA was named a finalist in the Global Green Beauty Awards before going on to win Gold for Best Natural Scalp Product.
For a small, independent Tasmanian maker, this was a moment of genuine pride.
Why I created SUBSTANTIA
As I explored the scalp care market, I felt there was a gap for a thoughtfully developed pre-shampoo treatment for fine, fragile and thinning-looking hair. I was particularly interested in the needs of more mature hair and scalp, which I felt deserved greater consideration.
I was also conscious of how much visibility in the beauty industry can be driven by marketing campaigns and media attention. Popularity doesn't necessarily tell us everything about the thought or formulation behind a product.
I wanted to take a different approach: to begin with the product itself, consider what I wanted it to achieve, and carefully select the ingredients that would form part of the finished treatment.
SUBSTANTIA had to meet a number of criteria before I was prepared to call it complete. I wasn't willing to settle for a formula that was simply good enough. I wanted to feel confident in the product I was putting my name behind.
Choosing ingredients with purpose
Two important ingredients in SUBSTANTIA are Tasmanian kelp and Amaranth biopeptides.
The kelp, Durvillaea potatorum, is a Tasmanian brown seaweed harvested under licence from the rugged west coast of Tasmania. Both its properties and its connection to the place I call home mattered to me. I wanted its inclusion to have a purpose within the formulation, not simply to provide an appealing ingredient story.
Amaranth biopeptides were another considered choice. I was interested in their potential contribution and how they would work alongside the other ingredients.
For me, good formulation isn't about collecting impressive ingredient names. It's about considering the complete formulation and ensuring each ingredient has a reason to be there.
That philosophy has always guided my work at LUMINUS: nothing unnecessary, everything considered.
Over a year in the making
SUBSTANTIA took over a year to formulate, refine and test. It was a process of reviewing the formulation, making adjustments and working towards the standards I had set.
As a one-person business without a dedicated laboratory team behind me, the research, decisions and development all happen behind the scenes. Customers may see the finished bottle, but they don't necessarily see the months of thought and work that went into creating it.
That time matters to me. I wanted SUBSTANTIA to be a product I could stand behind with confidence.
After more than 12 months of work, SUBSTANTIA was launched on 28 September 2026.
From finalist to Gold Winner
I decided to enter the Global Green Beauty Awards because I wanted SUBSTANTIA to be considered independently. I believed in the product, but with so much competition in the beauty industry, I wasn't expecting to win.
The awards celebrate the movement towards more environmentally considerate beauty products, packaging and sourcing. In 2026, they received more than 800 product entries across a range of green beauty categories.
When I learned that SUBSTANTIA had been selected as a finalist, I was genuinely happy. It was already meaningful recognition for a product that had taken so much time and care to develop.
Then came the news that SUBSTANTIA had won Gold for Best Natural Scalp Product.
I was so proud and excited.
To go from finalist to Gold Winner was an incredibly rewarding moment. I felt validated in the work I had put into SUBSTANTIA and proud to see a product developed by an independent Tasmanian maker recognised internationally.
It was something I had hoped for but certainly hadn't expected.

What this recognition means to me
Winning Gold is something I will always be proud of. It is a wonderful milestone for SUBSTANTIA and for LUMINUS.
But it hasn't changed the way I approach my work.
I still believe that a product should have a clear purpose, that ingredients should be chosen thoughtfully, and that the formulation process deserves time and care.
I still believe that customers deserve more than a compelling campaign. They deserve to understand what a product is, why it was developed and the thinking behind the choices that went into it.
And I still believe that creating something well is worth the time it takes.
SUBSTANTIA began with my feeling that there was room for a different approach to scalp care. It developed through over a year of considered work, and it has now received recognition that I could only have hoped for.
I am grateful to the Global Green Beauty Awards for recognising SUBSTANTIA, and proud to share this achievement as an independent Tasmanian maker.
Most of all, I hope that when you discover SUBSTANTIA, you can appreciate the thought behind it, as well as the product itself.
Because for me, that has always been the point.
